This fast-growing, fully hardy shrub produces fragrant white flowers with yellow centers from July to September, followed by large red or orange-red hips. It thrives in full sun and fertile, moist, well-drained soil. These two-year-old plants have been grown for one year in a seed bed and another in a larger field to develop a healthy fibrous root system. They are supplied at a height of 40-60cm, making them ideal for establishing informal hedges. For best results, plant these bareroot roses immediately upon arrival in deep holes twice as wide as the roots. Incorporate a generous amount of composted matter and apply a general-purpose fertilizer. Using Rose Rootgrow during planting can assist root development and help prevent replant disease. Spread the roots carefully, back-fill the hole, and firm the soil before watering well. Maintain generous watering until established and apply specialist rose fertilizer each spring, along with a mulch of composted farmyard manure kept away from the stems. Pruning should be minimal, as these roses flower best on older wood. Light formative pruning is recommended in late summer after flowering. Use tough gloves to remove dead or congested branches. If the plant becomes too leggy, one or two stems can be cut back to 10-15cm above ground level to stimulate new growth.
